After Love Leaves by Michelle Alstead

AfterloveleavesbannerAFTER LOVE LEAVESWhen Brad Sorenson crossed paths with Zoe O’Loughlin at a high school graduation party, the connection was undeniable. He noticed her when no one else did; she inspired him to want more out of life. But it would be years before they’d meet again…and in the most unlikely of places. Brad was looking for a good time online, not love. But Zoe was so sweet, so kind. Everything about her was perfect—until she fell in love with him. Zoe doesn’t know why Brad left her standing in an airport; he won’t return her calls or texts. With her self-esteem and dreams shattered, she can’t imagine ever loving anyone else. A single phone call changes Brad’s life forever. Now he wants just one thing: to make amends with the only woman that’s ever mattered.

Michelle Alstead is a single, divorced mom of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, who tries to promote autism Michelleawareness and advocate for gender equality while raising Sheldon Cooper and searching for some semblance of a love life. Michelle has experienced a wide-range of reasons for being dumped by the opposite sex (her favorite reason of all time – “she wasn’t crazy enough and crazy girls are so much fun”). She maintains that she is both Irish and Spanish and can bring the “crazy” just as good as the next woman. This author copes with the difficulties of raising her challenging child and failing at love, by eating copious amounts of chocolate, binge watching Netflix late at night, and writing novels about characters who find happy endings. Every great story has a grain of truth. Truth inspires freedom. Michelle has decided to free herself by acknowledging that life can be ugly, brutal, and wickedly unfair. Her stories aren’t the typical romances or the standard young adult fare. She seeks to be honest in her storytelling rather than playing it safe. Blending in wasn’t much fun anyway.

Follow the Book Tour

I was able to review this book for Ms. Michelle Alstead.  I love love stories especially ones with happy endings. This story had some frustrating moments in it, like pull my hair out and shake my fist frustrating and yelling why in the heck did that just happen.  There were stupid moments where the character just acted like an idiot or just missed their chance to be happy completely. It did show the common mistakes we take in finding love or just rush into love head first and expect a good turnout, sometimes it works but other times it’s a complete disaster.

There were a couple errors that I saw but she may have fixed them, like a mix up of characters just a couple times I was like what?! Why are they here? They weren’t in this I thought?! haha Had to reread it, nothing like keeping me on my toes. Other than that I did like her writing, you did get emotionally involved with the characters.

I did find it to be a page turner…. I was all “I must find out what happens next!!”  Is time yet? Come on… I was so rooting for Zoe to find her happily ever after though the whole book, but you have to read it to find out how it ends. The ending is great and when I was finished I was left with a complete feeling, not left hanging. So it was a good frustrating feel good read.

Bully by Emme Dun Book Tour

Bully is a fast paced legal thriller where “The L Word” meets “Kramer vs Kramer.” Bully begins in the 1980s when courts routinely stripped LGBT parents of their parental rights solely because they were gay. Bully then shifts to the 2000s to explore a typical lesbian relationship wherein Lisa meets Windy and they quickly fall for each other, despite Lisa’s plans for a baby.

Although Lisa and Windy never marry, when Lisa breaks it off because Windy reveals herself to be a deadbeat, Windy files for custody of Lisa’s daughter to fatal effect… Bully explores the legal and emotional issues faced by single parents in the LGBT community and leaves readers asking the question: what rights do parents really have?

It has been said, “In a world without law, you have chaos, oppression and tyranny and everyone doing what is right in their own eyes.” Bully is that story.

If you can make it out of Enid High School alive, you can make it through anything.
Alexis is the new girl at school, and she’s ruthlessly bullied. Hopeless, and drowning in her present reality, she takes pills—lots of pills. She’s sent to a mental health facility, where she meets a boy. Only the boy can’t save her, and no one can save her from herself.
Nick has secrets. He wants to open up to Alexis, but there’s the dead boy who haunts him. In his dreams. While he’s awake. He wants to be brave, but he can’t tell her about his past, and he can’t leave the facility.
Melanie rules over the school, until a nobody named Lexie tries to disrupt her reign. She won’t allow that. She also can’t stop it. She plummets into notoriety, but she’s determined to take them all with her. The girl, the boy, and their secrets.

Excerpt:

Nick’s arm brushes against mine as we cross the street, and he flinches.
I grit my teeth, holding in my irritation until we reach the beginning of the path. Then I slam my hands on my hips and glare at him. “Okay, what is your deal? If you really didn’t want to be with me today, why didn’t you just say it?”
He opens his mouth.
My glower deepens.
“I don’t like being out in public. I don’t…like being around people,” he says after a pause. “I like to be alone.”
I throw my arms up in frustration. “Then why did you agree to this?”
Nick steps closer. “But I like to be with you more than I like to be alone, and even though I don’t like to be around people, I like to be around you—probably more than I should. How could I say no to being with you, even if it’s in a setting I despise?”
“That’s messed up,” I say, shaking my head, even as a warm glow fills my insides.
“I’m messed up.”
“You’re not, not really.”
He lowers his head, taking my hands in his. Examining them. It feels like fire and ice when we touch. Sparks and frost. “You have no idea, Alexis.” Nick threads our fingers together, lifting our hands between us, and looks at me.
“Tell me,” I whisper, feeling like I can’t breathe. My air is caught somewhere within the magnetic pull of blue-green seas. Who needs to breathe anyway?
“Someday,” he promises, and then, with our hands still entwined, he leans forward and kisses me.
His lips are soft, firm. Magic. Tasting of dreams and hope. And grief too. I’m kissing not only Nick, but his soul as well. I feel his heartbeat with my lips. I taste the feelings he has for me, and they are overwhelming. Catastrophically beautiful. The kiss lasts long enough to rearrange everything inside me, to steal my breath, to give it back. To let me know Nick has the power to ruin me. To let me know I’d probably let him.

Captain Hawkins by H. Peter Alesso

Strong vibrant characters with action packed battle drama

Jamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night–his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the cross-hairs of avenging soldiers.
Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.
Once in prison, his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet–giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.
From then on, Captain Jamie Hawkins and his ship the Indefatigable fought against a corrupt government–only to discover a mysterious alien presence behind the war.

Excerpt:

Taryn. Get up.” I looked in the direction of the door. “Go away.” The door swung open, and Luke marched for the bed. Even in the gray cast morning I could see his lips pressed together, and that his eyes were promising all kinds of retribution. It was a small consolation that he smelled sweet, with a dash of bitter. From what I’d encountered so far, that basically summed up Luke. Or maybe it was bitter, with a dash of sweet.I flipped thick hair off my face and glared back. “What do you want?”

“What did I tell you yesterday?”

“I don’t know and I don’t care.” It was too early for this. “I’m going back to bed. Leave.” I flopped to my side and pulled the thick blanket up to my chin, closing my eyes with a contented smile on my lips. The blanket was immediately torn from me, along with all the warmth it provided. “Hey!”

“Training for you starts now.”

“It’s in the middle of the night,” I cried, grabbing for the blanket. Luke kept it out of my reach by putting a hand to my forehead.

“It’s six in the morning. It’s time to get up. I’ll be back in five minutes. If you’re not ready and—” He leaned forward until our faces were inches apart. “—positively cheerful, you won’t like what I do next.”

“Oh, yeah?”

I taunted as he strode from the room. “We’ll see about that, you equally cheerful person!”Luke backtracked and I scrambled from the bed, suddenly awake and ready for some training. I even gave him a smart salute. I caught his smirk before he disappeared.

my-reviewTaryn was just an average girl with an average life, who new it would all change on her way to work?

I love Lindy Zart! I also love her name ha and I love her writing especially, everything I read of hers she likes to either make me crack up or shake my fist and say why Lindy why! But she’s just doing her job which is make you fall in love with every single character. I really hate love triangles but what she is able to do is create a scene that makes it ok, each character touches your heart so it makes her choice ok.

This story was amazing to me because it had that paranormal romance I love and it didn’t have you doubting, if you read it you’ll know I mean. Taryn knew what she wanted and didn’t sway even when there were obstacles it didn’t matter, she was extremely likeable in a prickly hedgehog sort of way. Hedgehogs are so stinking adorable but if you rub them the wrong way their going to stab you. I loved her mouth she always had something smart to say which made her endearing to others.

I wanted to take Creed and stuff him and put him on my bed as a teddy bear, though my husband may not be too happy about that. He was such a great character, the perfect manang. He’s got such a heart of love an rarity among all of his kind, yet his cocky demeanor made him oh so irresistible.

Luke on the other hand entered the scene with a broody characteristic he tried to be unlikeable but I like those kinds of characters so he had no chance. He turned out to be so awesome and amazing that he might as well join my stuffed character collection.

I don’t know what else to say but this book was very refreshing and left you with bubbly happy feelings sort of like drinking your first cup of coffee for the day 😉 So go get this book today you wont regret it. You may want to start your own character collection.

Lemon Chia Seed Donuts

img_4317

I like lemon poppy seed anything and saw some donuts on Pinterest. Well I got to thinking I wasn’t quite sure about poppy seed being that healthy but I knew chia seeds were. So I thought hey why not?  I love donuts soo much but also don’t like very sweet foods. The recipe I came up with was awesome not too sweet but sweet enough. This recipe I found was a regular recipe if you have no limits that recipe credit goes to  Baker by Nature. The icing on these look a little heavy for me so I did a little different one. I’m vegan and I saw this recipe and thought “I can vegan that.” And I did the results are in.

They are perfect!! The Chia Seeds where perfect they tasted exactly as poppy seeds with that little bite. Yum!! A touch of lemon with just the right amount of sweetness. Sweet baby Jesus these where super yummy!

img_4313   img_4314

I used my Keliwa Silicon Donut Baking Pan and it worked perfect. They baked evenly and came right out of the pan no spray needed. I loved how light weight this pan is and I am slowly moving towards the silicon pans, they are awesome. It was my first time baking in it and it did not have that odor you typically get. These donuts were the perfect size also so I have no issue with the size.

img_4315   img_4316

Lemon Chia Seed Donuts

  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp vegan butter, melted
  • 1 chai egg (1 Tbsp ground chai seed & 3 Tbsp water mixed together and set aside to thicken)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup almond milk

Glaze

  • 1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp almond milk or a little more for the consistency you like

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a small bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and poppy seeds; set aside.

In a large bowl combine the granulated sugar and lemon zest; mix together with your fingers until zest is evenly distributed in the sugar. Add in the melted butter and beat until combined. Add in the egg and vanilla; beat well. Stir in milk.

Add in the dry ingredients and gently fold the mixture together using a rubber spatula, stirring only until mixture is evenly combined.

Spoon the thick batter into the molds of your prepared pan, filling each mold up 2/3 of the way. Bake for 10-11 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden on the tops.

Remove pan from oven and allow doughnuts to cool for at least 10 minutes in the tray before transferring to a cooling wrack.

For the Glaze:

In a wide, shallow dish combine juice and sugar, and whisk to combine. Let set a few minutes, and drizzle over donuts. You probably should let them cool but in my house we eat them right of the oven. lol
